Silfab

A new highly automated PV module production site based in Ontario with a capacity of 120 MW to be reached in two stages - the first 60MW will be completed by the second quarter of 2011 whereas the remaining 60 MW will be finalized by the end of next year: this is the new ambitious venture of the multinational vertically-integrated provider Silfab SpA dedicated to the production of components and systems that span the entire PV supply chain. The company is already scouting the new plant’s location and is completing the administrative procedures to register the new Ontario subsidiary. The new organization will be controlled by Silfab International BV (Netherlands), the international holding in charge of all international operations of Silfab SpA.

Equipped with the most advanced technologies, the new plant will manufacture high-efficiency photovoltaic modules built with monocrystalline and polycrystalline silicon cells with a power up to 300 Wp, suited for both rooftop and ground-mounted applications. Although the facility will primarily target the Ontario market, the new ‘made in Ontario’ Silfab modules will also be distributed across the U.S., thanks to the joint-venture formed by Silfab earlier this year with REgeneration Finance LLC, a premier developer of solar energy projects based in New York.

The installation of the first production line is scheduled by the end of the summer whereas manufacturing operations will start between the end of 2010 and early 2011. Meanwhile, the training of the personnel will be conducted in a European photovoltaic company founded and owned by Silfab President and CEO, Franco Traverso, pioneer of Italian photovoltaic technologies. Thanks to Traverso’s three decades of experience in the solar business, the European company today manufactures all Silfab PV modules, which have already been certified for the Canadian and North American markets.

"With this new venture we aim at effectively meeting the growing Canadian and, more generally, North American demand for renewable energy products” commented Franco Traverso. “The extensive experience in photovoltaic technologies gained by our founders and business partners over the past three decades enables us to undertake such an important project with confidence and optimism” added Traverso. “For Silfab, this is an invaluable opportunity to further enhance our supply chain already set up to provide Silfab with the full range of raw materials and technologies, from ingots and wafers to solar cells for the production of high-efficiency PV modules”.

Silfab’s internal integrated value chain relies on the crucial partnership with leading PV companies such as the Taiwanese SAS, manufacturer of silicon ingots and wafers since 1981, and PAS/Sunrise, dedicated to the production of solar cells.

"Over the past three decades, I have been experiencing that high-quality photovoltaic modules can withstand the extreme weather conditions typically registered in Northern countries such as Germany, Sweden, and Norway,” concludes Traverso “and Ontario does not represent an exception. Although in Ontario our solar modules will most likely be exposed to extreme temperature excursions, in addition to heavy snow falls and strong winds, we do not have any doubt that our products will deliver reliable and long-tern performances.”

The annual capacity of 120MW corresponds to about 500,000 PV modules, whose energy production equals to the consumption of 13,000 households and CO2 emissions reduction of 95,000 tons/year.
